As of yet, the following backstory regarding Exu is speculative with evidential foundations. It may not be completely correct, but it is also quite likely that it is not perfectly correct.
Dr. Jakub Ukrytywicz was born Anwell to a Polish family in
[?upstate New York]. When he was two, his family was killed and he
was adopted by Jorma Barierascu. Jakub grew up, until when he was
approximately 21 or 22, his father attempted to kill him. Jorma
believed he had survived, but Anwell escaped with his life. Staying
hidden, Anwell watched as Jorma took over Anwell’s life—and Anwell
thus learned that Jorma had actually killed Anwell’s parents as
well. Because he was supposedly dead, and his father looked like
him and had taken on his name now, Anwell changed his name to Jakub
Ukrytywicz (which is Polish for “Secretson”) and eventually joined
the staff of Miskatonic University.
Dr. U eventually joined the Council, as a member of The
Esoteric, though all the time he was monitoring his father’s
cult, Chorazos, with the intent of eventually bringing
them down. Thus, he knew about the Physics Experiment that was
planned for the Taylor Run Caves, though what he did about said
Experiment is unclear. In his letter to Jjason in September 2007, Exu alluded
that the Esoteric are not generally called upon by the Council,
thus the Esoteric seem to be their own organization.
(The information below is certain, not speculative)
Howard Phillips was a particularly notable
student of Exu’s, and Elizabeth Riley one of his friends and
colleagues. Exu also employed Howard for many small computer
programming tasks while Howard was at Miskatonic University, and as of
recently Howard has been similarly employed by Exu for some
yet-unknown task that has taken him away from the internet and all
over the country.
Exu’s direct relations with the New Sentries are highly limited. He
joined the Outpost at Howard’s request to help solve the mystery of
the site hack, and while his posts on the Outpost were minimal,
they were chock-full of allusions and hints. He returned later to
warn the Sentries that the Red Moon in August 27 would be
devastating, but nothing world-destroying occurred (though Stu and
Jen were both killed that day).
He similarly reached out to Jjason in September, when he sent a
letter to Jjason. Shortly afterwards, he called
Howard with an odd voice message that led to Dr. Riley’s files
which she had uploaded to in.solit.us.
The most recent meeting with Exu took place on December 19, 2008, when the Sentries in New
York ran into him just outside the subway. He talked to them
briefly and handed them a letter,
instructing them to give it to Spukhafte Fernwirkung at Druids bar.
Explaining that he could not be seen with them, Exu had them wait
five minutes before following him down.
Spukhafte’s only response to Exu’s letter was to issue a public
broadcast to the members of Chorazos, telling them to hunt down
Exu’s associates and to bring Exu to him alive.
